Adult ADD
Is Adult ADD the same as the Attention Deficit Disorder seen in children?
Adult
ADD is usually a continuation of childhood ADHD but
often without the hyperactivity. It is treated medically with the same
drugs that are available for children, as most of the symptoms are
common among both children and adults.
ADD/ADHD is a neurological brain disorder that manifests itself as a persistent pattern of inattention, impulsivity and/or hyperactivity. It is more frequent and severe than is typically observed in individuals at a comparable level of development.
The disorder interferes with psychological functions such as planning, managing time and decision making. Adults with ADHD might tell their doctor about symptoms which include: lack of focus, disorganization, restlessness, difficulty finishing projects, and/or losing things. These symptoms are particularly burdensome to those whose work involves deadlines and/or organizing and recalling complex information.
A common consequence of Adult ADD is low self-esteem or self-confidence that results from failure at school, difficulties in the workplace and the negative comments of others. Their impulsive behavior often creates difficulties in social environments and leads to failure in relationships. Studies show the divorce rate is high for adults with ADHD.
The greatest difficulty in accurately diagnosing adult
attention deficit disorder is that other conditions can mimic ADHD
symptoms.
Depression, anxiety, schizophrenia and bipolar disorder are
similar conditions that disturb executive function and may
resemble ADD/ADHD. Because of this, a careful assessment
should be
carried out
by an
experienced clinician before treatment is undertaken.
Medication
has been found to be effective for about 75% of adults with ADHD in
reducing or eliminating many symptoms of the disorder. Adderall,
Concerta and Ritalin are common treatments but they are not recommended
for people with a history of drug or alcohol abuse. These medications
are controlled substances with a fairly high degree of addiction
potential in adults. For those looking for an alternative to
medication, there are also natural
remedies and alternative
therapies that are proven effective.
The exact cause
of ADD/ADHD is unknown, but most scientists agree that it is a
biologically-based disorder of the nervous system. Like other common
adult disorders such as high blood pressure and diabetes, Adult ADD is
a
lifelong condition that if treated properly, can be managed
effectively.
