ADHD Diet Information
Are you looking for an ADHD diet? Do you think that if you just eliminate certain foods from your daily intake you will no longer be hyperactive?
There
are many people in the world who think that Attention Deficit
Hyperactive Disorder simply doesn’t exist. They say it’s a “disease”
made up by the medical community to benefit the pharmaceutical
companies.
Furthermore, they claim the only reason why children and adults are hyperactive, or lack focus is because of something in their diet.
The latter may be true, but the idea begs for a closer look at diet and how it affects inattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity which are the most common symptoms of ADD/ADHD.
You’ve heard it said a million times that sugar makes children
hyperactive. You may have also heard the same thing said about soft
drinks and chocolate. But what have you heard about the affects of
artificial colors, dyes and flavors? Probably not much! But think about
it. Could it be the “Aspartame” or “Yellow #5” that’s making you feel
scattered and driving you to want to jump out of your skin?
ADHD Diets
The Feingold Diet is a unique way of eating that focuses on the consumption of “whole foods”. Instead of it being specifically an ADHD diet, it's more of an elimination diet that does not allow you to eat foods that contain artificial coloring, artificial flavoring, artificial preservatives (BHA, BHT or TBHQ) or aspartame (NutraSweet). The program states that some of these items are made from petroleum (crude oil). They also contain chemicals that when consumed on a daily basis can make people hyperactive.
Feingold takes children back to basics. Instead of eating Pop Tarts, kids can eat toast with butter and jam. Instead of Fruity Peebles, people can eat regular Corn Flakes. The program also encourages people to stay away from multi-colored toothpaste and go back to the old way of brushing your teeth with plain white toothpaste.
Some experts say this type of program can work, but only for a small percentage of children. Parents who do have sucess claim their children are doing better in school, sleep better, and are allergy free. Best of all, most of the children on this type of ADHD diet are calmer and a lot more controlled.
Watch What You Eat
Whether you decide to take part in either of these programs or not, it is still wise to take a closer look at the foods you are eating and consider making a change. The right ADHD diet should include lots of protein, and organic fruits and vegetables. You should also feed the brain with plenty of water. Cut out sugary foods and processed foods and limit your dairy intake.
The bottom line is that prior to the 1940s the number of people diagnosed with ADD and ADHD was small. Today, one in 10 children is overly hyperactive and inattentive. Could this be because we are eating differently than we were back then?
Maybe the best solution for treating Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is to just choose an ADD ADHD diet that only includes your basic whole foods and add to it a healthy lifestyle.
